Spotless Data's version 18 release makes it easier to comply with GDPR and other regulations which protect the digital rights and privacy of citizens.
We are delighted to announce the release of Spotless version 18. We have focussed this release on GDPR compliance, coming into force on May 25th, by offering our customers the possibility of having everything they need for offline processing.
In this new release, our customers can now do their data cleaning without their data ever leaving their own infrastructure. This comes with no functionality that is consumer-facing and is achieved through a slightly different python configuration from the default configuration. If you are interested in implementing this offline processing, please contact us using the white square icon with a smile which you can find at the bottom right-hand corner of any of the pages of our website.
This new Spotless release means that you no longer need to trust us to store your data even for the short period of time that it takes to clean them. This cleaning is typically a two-step process. In the first step, we analyse all your data and then submit a report with suggestions as to how to we think the file should be cleaned. The second step is the cleansing itself, after which you end up with a new modified file and clean, quality data.
Our default mode is to process and clean your data in Ireland, within the EU. Another alternative is to request that the data are cleaned in Singapore or the USA, both outside the EU. However, GDPR concerns all data about EU citizens so processing your data outside the EU is only a way to avoid GDPR compliance if said data are not about people located in the EU.
We set up Spotless Data and developed its machine learning filters with an awareness that new stricter data and privacy regimes, such as GDPR, with its protection of the digital rights of EU citizens, were going to mean that the great majority of companies were going to need cleaner data, free from the errors and inconsistencies of rogue data.
Without well-organised data that has undergone data validation companies will not be data compliant. It only takes one disgruntled individual to make a serious complaint about their digital rights having being violated to inflict severe damage on the reputation of the company being accused.
We can imagine a scenario where somebody has to defend the actions of their company accused of a GDPR infraction in the following terms:
"We realised that the 1st step towards ensuring that our business is successfully protecting the rights of EU citizens whose data we collect and store is to ensure that said data have data quality. Our data typically come from multiple sources where both the data and metadata are inconsistent, and the former are also full of often surprising amounts of errors. Unfortunately, there is not always consistency in the data within our company either, due to it being big data and with our having multiple locations in various countries.
"So we chose Spotless Data. We liked their interactive API where you just sign-up and then log-in as opposed to where software has to be downloaded onto all the devices which are to be used for cleaning the data. We liked the quality of the data which they had cleaned, making our own data integration processes much easier. It definitely has helped us and has made complying with GDPR easier. We initially had some concerns as the data was being processed in Ireland (or the US or Singapore on request). We were unsure about letting our data into any third-party hands in case some problem occurred which might mean that we had inadvertently broken GDPR in terms of some of our customers and of others EU citizens about whom we had collected data. But once Spotless were able to allow us to do the whole data cleaning and validation process without our data leaving our own servers we were satisfied that this was the data quality service for us."
Spotless is now GDPR compliant, and we want to help you make sure that your data are also GDPR compliant when it comes to their data cleaning and data validation. You can read our introduction to using our API to validate your data and then try out our service on your my filters page but, for this, you need to log in first. You can take advantage of our free offer of 500Mb of free data cleaning to see how much you like our service. If you haven't already done so, you can sign-up using your email address, Facebook, Google or GitHub accounts. You may also view our video on data cleaning an EPG file, which also explains how to use our API.
We use the https protocol, guaranteeing your data are secure while they are in our care and that they are not accessible by any third party, a responsibility we take very seriously.
